Abstract

The research analyzedthe associationbetween social capital and social competence, and the mediating role of parenting style in the link. Thestudy employed 1,755 adolescent boys and girls, who were in the basic level of education and completed questionnaire regarding family social capital and parenting styles. Peers and form masters,onthe other hand,completed questionnaire measuring students’ social competence. The studyunveiled significant relationship between social capital and social competence. The results revealed that there is high dividend in improving parent-child relationship. The results also disclosed that parenting style plays mediating role in the association between social capital and social competence. The nexus between the two constructs signalsa crucial role that parents ought to play in their children’s education in general and social competencedevelopmentin particular. Implications for further research are discussed and recommendations have been proffered.
